All round skills and strong team spirit defeat Wormelow

Ian Lunt7 Jul 2019 - 22:53

Nigel Shore

The Under 11A team won the toss on a lovely sunny morning at Wormelow, and elected to field. Opening the bowling, captain Max Knill clean bowled both openers in his first over, with Toby Jones also taking a wicket in the 4th over. The fielding looked very sharp, and the team were backing each other all the way. Rob Yeo bowled a fast, tight spell without a wicket, while Nishant Hanasoghe's wily spin bowled one and would have had three more if l.b.w. counted in these games! Eight overs down and the Wormelow score was not yet in positive territory.

James Foggo and Ben Warburton then unfortunately came up against a couple of big-hitting batters and conceded a few. Charlie Hamdi corrected his action after a shaky start and took an excellent wicket clean bowled, while at the other end Finley Seymour kept it tight with a wicket maiden. Will Cripps bowled tidily, with one wicket to his name and a run out, while Max picked up one more as he and Rob finished the innings. Wormelow ended on 234 with 9 wickets down. A strong performance all round in the field, with superb catches by Max and Toby, and the safe and confident hands of Oliver Daws behind the stumps taking everything cleanly with almost no byes going through.

Not a high target, but it had to be reached safely. Oliver and Toby opened the batting, with some clever and confident pushes into the close field and fast running notching up the first runs. The Wormelow bowling was fast and accurate though, and three wickets in the first four overs showed that this was not going to be so simple. James and Ben followed, pushing the score on nicely, with the aid of a few no-balls. Nish and Fin faced some fast bowling and were pinned down, with the exception of a magnificant four from Nish, but did not concede a wicket, as the Wormelow total was passed. Charlie and Will built steadily on the total, again with no wickets down, so when Max and Rob came in as the last pair the game was fairly safe and they could play with freedom - which they did with style, hitting four boundaries including a massive hit by Max off the last ball - 284 for the loss of 6 wickets.

This is an excellent, fast-developing and confident squad, with some outstanding talents, but most importantly a tremendous team spirit. They are a pleasure to coach, and after last week's disappointment in the Cup thoroughly deserved their excellent win today.
