Wormelow crossed the river to Fort Bartestree today. Weather was stable, pitch had a touch of green, captain Lee won the toss and put us in the field.
Openers Carlos and Noah had the ball swinging like crazy, batsman playing and missing continuously. The Worms built 47/0 off 9. Time to wheel out the AK. He didn’t disappoint; from his chair to the lair, 9 straight through 1/28. Cracking one hander millimetres off the deck by Robbo at slip. Andy was supported by Tim B 1/26 bowling straight through. Both again had multiple played and misses. Tim’s wicket however expertly taken by Sam behind the sticks. Tim also snagged us a run out to AKs wizardary.
Our wicket takers bowled out with oppo at 102/3 off 27 it was time to bring back Carlos, supported by Pete and Elliot. Difficult part of the game as their middle order was settled and put on 70 in 9.
What to do skip? Hold up, Robbo’s injured his groin and has the gloves on, didn’t someone say Sam once bowled a Beamer in the nets? You’re having a giraffe. Oh well give him the nut, what’s the worst that can happen? 4/29 off 5?c&b, caught Noah and Lee and bowled.? .
With a run out by Lee, we were set 256. Three extremely difficult catches missed, Robbo needing a runner and 48 extras made it a bit tough but very manageable.
Sam and I started nicely both striking powerfully and accurately before I weakly fed gully. Sadly Pete and Elliot departed early trying to push the score on bringing in Lee. Together He and Sam smoked 70 in 15 slipping us into a decent position before Sam’s fantastic top scoring knock of 63 came to a close with a skied one. Webby went to the spinner meaning a limping Robbo and his runner came to join the skipper. Lee obviously seeing double missed a straight one after another very controlled innings of 31. Noah powered a quick 26, boshed off 21, clearing the field on several occasions. After Carlos departed AK and Tim certainly had fun striking 33 between them to all ends, Tim ending 19 n.o.
Another day of what might have been. Our quickies sneaking past the outside edge on 20 occasions, a couple of lose overs, a lose shot here and there, injured fielder, finger tip catches. A game we should have taken and will in the future. Great performance by one and all and a thoroughly enjoyable day despite falling 40 odd short.
Thankyou to Fiona and Geoff for scoring and Graham and his team for a pitch that didn’t have one ball misbehave in 90 overs from what I recall. We cross the border next week lads, we go international. Creoso I cymru
